Become a Parish Missionary...

What is the time commitment?

Hands of Truth missionary staff make an initial two-year commitment. Training is on site where you are assigned a supervisor, who will speak with you at least once a week, or more often, as required. Most of our missionaries will stay in their parish several years; others will go on to explore religious life, get married, take another job, or enter graduate school.

What are the job requirements?

  • A hunger to know Jesus Christ more intimately on a personal basis
  • A burning desire to see lives transformed by Jesus Christ
  • A willingess to meet parishioners on their turf and in their homes
  • Faithfulness to the Roman Catholic Church

Hands of Truth is loyal to Jesus Christ and our Holy Father, the Pope. We are faithful to the teachings of the Church. We support our priests, bishops and religious. We encourage our parishioners and staff to explore God’s call in their lives, whether it be to the married, single or consecrated life. We hope to present the timeless truths of the faith in a timely way.

Missionary life requires availability. Hands of Truth missionaries are asked to “dive in” to parish life – keeping flexible hours, reaching out in the homes of parishioners, joining already formed ministries, inviting parishioners to breakfast or lunch. Parishioners come from a variety of backgrounds and cover multiple age groups. Our missionaries should be willing and able to engage our youth, as well as older age groups, or find the persons to help them acheive that personal bond.

Does Hands of Truth have a mission statement?

"Gathering your parish family around the Fireside. The Fire of the Holy Eucharist. Our mission is about family, about igniting love and passion for our faith within families, about building community and about focus on our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Eucharist.

Where will I serve?

Our missionaries make a commitment in any parish where we are welcomed by the pastor or any current parish where Hands of Truth has a program. Every year we will add new parishes to our growing movement. Check out the "Current Parishes" section of the website for a current list of parishes.

What will I do?

First, you will meet and spend one week with a current parish missionary. You will spend time with them running group intiatives, praying together and working with the parishioners. You will discuss scripture, apologetics, discipleship, Church Teaching and Fundraising. Your questions will be answered. This is the beginning of training and it will include daily Mass, opportunities for the sacrament of Reconciliation, practical workshops and plenty of fun times!

After you have settled upon your own parish, and have been welcomed by the pastor, you will spend 2-3 weeks planning your mission with your supervisor before you begin. You will also spend this time praying and discerning the will of God. This planning time will include practice for your introduction to your parishioners.

Once you begin, you will visit parishioners in their homes and build a team of those supportive of your work. You will set up, advertise and run Lectio Divina groups and you will begin slowly getting to know the parishioners and allowing them to get to know you.

Be ready to watch lives transform!

Is this a paid position?

Yes, work with Hands of Truth is paid if you are willing to raise the support you need. As in other missionary organizations, Hands of Truth missionary staff members raise 100% of their living expenses while serving with Hands of Truth. Each missionary staff member cultivates a support team of families, individuals and businesses who become partners in our work. In addition to providing financial support, a support team also becomes a wellspring of prayer and moral support.

Our training includes excellent instruction in fundraising, as well as coaching and personal attention from other Hands of Truth staff.

Hands of Truth missionaries are on a health insurance plan, and are provided with a parish ministry expense account to help facilitate outreach on campus.

Do I have what it takes?

Let God decide that aspect! We are not looking so much for ABILITY, as for AVAILABILITY. Our staff members have a wide variety of backgrounds, from marketing to philosophy, from history to psychology. They come from state schools and Catholic schools; they are cradle Catholics and converts. What characterizes them all, is a love for Jesus Christ and the Church He founded.

Hands of Truth staff will pour themselves into service and prayer throughout their mission. They will attend a holy hour of adoration before our Blessed Lord at least once each week and they will attempt to attend daily Mass. Every missionary must commit to continual self reflection in the light of the life of Jesus Christ and the guidance of his Holy Catholic Church.

Above all, the question every potential staff member should ask him/herself is…

“Do I have the heart for this mission?”
